What is the AS-20 System?
The AS-20 is a total case management system that puts frozen and medium temp cases under your stringent control. The AS-20 combines the world's most accurate anti-sweat controls with optional 24 hour case temperature monitoring and dispatch. The system will save the average retailer thousands of dollars annually.

How does the AS-20 work?
The AS-20 works for you in two ways:
- Anti-Sweat Control
Glass display doors have energy hungry heaters built into them in order to keep them from condensation. These heaters run 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The AS-20 will reduce this energy consumption from 70% to 90%.
The AS-20 utilizes a revolutionary dew point sensor that continually monitors the store conditions and frame temperatures to determine when condensation will start to form. When frame and door temperatures are nearing condensation, the controller will automatically turn the heaters on until condensation is no longer a danger and then back off again. The AS-20 is typically installed on each case individually to assure maximum savings!
- Case Temperature Monitoring
The AS-20 is designed to give you optional case temperature monitoring on a 24 hour, seven day a week basis. With easy retrofit installation you can have the ability to know what your case temperatures are at any given time. The system will report wirelessly to your store computer and give you daily temperature graphs on each case. This can be valuable for regulatory agencies and also gives you the ability to average case temperatures to assure proper compressor settings for optimal energy usage. The AS-20 will also sound an alarm and automatically call our call center for 24 hour dispatch if a case temperature abnormality is detected. This saves thousands in needless spoilage and cleanup in the event of an equipment failure.

Why should I consider the AS-20?
Glass display doors and mullions require a tremendous amount of energy to heat. Based on $0.06 per kWh, each door costs $175 to $225 a year to heat. At $0.10 per kWh, each door costs from $270 to $400 a year to heat. Although that may not sound like much, when you multiply that by 20, 50 or 100 doors, it becomes a serious cost concern. How will AS-20 affect the way my refrigeration works?
After the installation of the AS-20, the door and mullion heaters run so much cooler that the refrigeration system works less. The refrigeration is no longer trying to compensate for the heat that the doors are giving off. All Frozen Food Case Manufacturers realize that these glass display doors generate excessive amounts of heat into the freezer and cooler cases. AS-20 allows you to eliminate a small portion of the refrigeration it takes to eliminate the heat.

Why do we use one AS-20 unit per case?
Part of your power bill is charged by demand. Demand is the highest 15-minute usage in a billing period. Demand can amount to half of your electricity bill. If all your heaters are on at the same time, this will raise the demand load. By controlling each case individually, AS-20 effectively reduces the demand load because it is extremely unlikely to have all your cases on at the same time when they are off 70% of the time, individually. Independent studies have shown that if AS-20 reduces the run time of door heaters by 70%, then the demand is also reduced accordingly.

What if I already have another system, why would I want to install AS-20?
Chances are that if you have an older system, it is set to the maximum position to keep the doors heating all the time. If this isn't the case, you are probably saving between 10% and 30% annually on kWh consumption only. Compare this to the AS-20 system that will save from 70% to 90% in most cases!! Add in the reduction in demand and the refrigeration that the AS-20 saves, and the differences are staggering!

How long will the AS-20 last?
The AS-20 system has been tested independently and expected to last over 29 years. Because of the AS-20's solid-state nature, there is not much to go wrong with it. Once the AS-20 is installed on a refrigeration system, it will be virtually maintenance free for a long time to come.

What are my companies return on an AS-20 investment?
This is probably the most frequently asked question. It is usually between 8 to 30 months. To get a more accurate answer, ControTec needs to conduct an energy audit at your particular store. The information gathered from your doors and mullions plus your cost per kWh is entered into a program that will give ControlTec an actual return on your investment using the above formulas. Remember that the money it costs to purchase the AS-20 system is money you are currently sending to the Electric Company. The AS-20 is a tool to put that money back into your profits.

What if there is a problem after installing the AS-20?
No problem! Since the AS-20 is a digitally controlled system, there is not much to go wrong with it. In the unlikely event that a problem would arise, a three-year warranty is included with the AS-20 and ControlTec will dispatch a service technician.

What if I have a lot of doors? Isn't it expensive?
It does cost more to install the AS-20 if you have more doors, but the savings are directly proportionate. If you have 5 doors or 200 doors your payback remains the same.

If I plan on changing out my refrigerated display cases in the next couple of years. Can I transfer the AS-20?
The AS-20 system can easily be transferred if you change cases. If you do change cases in the first two years, ControlTec will change them for a nominal installation fee or can instruct your electrician how to do it.

Does the AS-20 require adjustment?
No adjustments are required. The system uses an exact science and automatic dew point calculation to know exactly when dew point will occur and heat the doors when needed. With the optional software package and wireless communication board you can manually override the system anytime you would like with the click of a button from your keyboard!
